Both are good tools. The right one depends on who edits the site after launch and how far the design departs from the ordinary.

We build with page builders and we build custom themes. Neither is the better choice in general; each is the better choice for a particular team.

Who edits the site after launch?

If a marketing team needs to create new landing pages on their own, a builder such as Elementor gives them that freedom. If content changes but layouts do not, a custom theme with clear fields is quicker to use and harder to break.

How unusual is the design?

Standard layouts are fast to produce in a builder. Designs with heavy motion, unusual grids or strict performance targets are cleaner to write by hand.

How long will the site live?

A campaign site that runs for a year has different needs from a company site that will be extended for five. Long-lived sites benefit from the smaller footprint of a custom theme.

Our rule of thumb

  • Builder when the team creates new layouts often and the design is conventional.
  • Custom theme when speed, a distinctive design or long-term maintenance matter most.
  • Headless when the front end needs to do things WordPress themes are not meant to do.

We make the recommendation on the first call, with the reasons, so the choice is yours.
